WASPA Johannesburg Tournament a huge success

The South African Table Football Association (SATFA) hosted their first World Amateur Subbuteo Players Association (WASPA) Tournament on Friday evening (09/09/11) at Panorama Sports Club. The Johannesburg Tournament was WASPA's eighth tournament this year with early tournaments held in USA, Belguim, Malta (twice), Sweden, Singapore and Japan.

The Johannesburg tournament saw a big field of 19 entrants who were divided into three groups of five and one group of four. Each group were assigned to their respective playing table. After a round robin stage the top two from each group progressed to the quarter finals. The first quarter final saw Clifford Graaff defeat ever improving junior Cameron Keylock by two goals to nil. Junior,  Daygin Prescott produced the first shock of the tournament when he defeated Fernando Rodrigues on shots after an goalless match. Jason Kennedy, back after a hiatus of nearly nine months accounted for another junior, Dylan Joannou by the odd goal in an entertaining encounter. In the battle of the juniors, Cohen Naidoo defeated African Junior Champion, Alex Rodrigues also by the odd goal in an extremely tight sencounter. Daygin Prescott's great run came to an end when he lost to Clifford in the first semi final. The second semi final also produced an upset when Cohen Naidoo defeated Jason Kennedy on shots after a one-all draw in a dramatic semi final.

The final saw junior, Cohen Naidoo play Clifford Graaff. In a very close and tight game Clifford edged out Cohen by a single goal to stop a very determined junior who is surely in line for most improved player of the year.

SATFA Chairman was very impressed with both the turnout and great progress that the juniors have made this season and stated the following: 'Five of the top eight players were juniors, all from our club which is a potential hotbed for future stars. The enthusiasm and excitement displayed by all the juniors made this tournament a truly memorable occassion. We have junior players who are continually improving their game and giving the senior players some serious challenges. This augurs well for our club and table football at our club'.

SATFA plan on holding a WASPA tournament every three months to build on the momentum created from this first, very successful international recognised tournament. World Championship WASPA points will be awarded to all entrants. As soon as the latest world rankings are released it will be posted on this site.

PSL News

The Premier Subbuteo League is the first table football (Subbuteo) league in South Africa whereby players will have the opportunity to host games at their home venue. Obviously certain players will not have the necessary fields at their home to host games, these players may then 'base' their home ground at existing venues. The league will then be based on the normal 'home' and 'away' format. Cup competitions will also be played on the 'home' and 'away' format. It is envisaged that more players will have their own 'home' ground which may be customized to suit their own style of play, for example slow/fast and soft/hard playing fields.

Emphasis will be on enjoying hosting games and the cameraderie which will result with all participating players.

A PSL Committee will be established whereby the ensuing league formats, and hopefully new areas will be set up and pro-active ideas will be formulated to insure the growth of table football in South Africa.

The PSL is part of the South African Table Football Association (SATFA) which hosts a yearly African/South African Table Football Championship whereby any player can vie for top honours. SATFA is also affiliated to the Federation International Sports Table Football (FISTF), and our local players appear on the international rankings.

A lot is hoped for with the establishment of the PSL to promote table football in South Africa and hopefully table football players in other parts of our country will form their own regional leagues which will be included and appear on this website.

Table Football a great success at the International Food Festival

A table football exhibition was held at the annual International Food Festival at St John The Apostle Catholic Church on the 28th of August 2011. There was two playing tables and in excess of 30 table football games were played with the winners earning various spot prizes. A small entry fee was charged and all funds went to the St John Catholic Church.

One of the many highlights was when former boxing World Champion, Dingaan 'Rose of Soweto' Thobela also had a go on one of the tables and thoroughly enjoyed himself. The Rose was crowned World Champion on three occassions, 1990/1993 in the lightweight division and in 2000 in the Super Middleweight division. These photos will be posted on this site very shortly.
